[PHOTOS] Concerns Growing Over Ice Jams on the Mohawk River

United States Geological Survey

Flooding is a threat to the Stockade area of Schenectady as well as Alplaus and Rexford

Winter in the Capital Region brings plenty of cold and snow, but one hidden danger lurks beneath the surface—ice jams on the Mohawk River. These occur when chunks of ice break apart, pile up, and block the river’s flow. Recently, areas near Schenectady and Clifton Park have seen ice buildup, raising concerns about potential flooding.

When temperatures fluctuate, ice shifts and can create sudden water surges, which can impact homes, roads, and bridges. Local officials and emergency management teams keep a close watch, especially in spots like Lock 7 in Niskayuna, a known trouble area for ice jams.

Other areas of concern include the riverbanks near SUNY SCCC, the Stockade in Schenectady and areas of Alplaus and Rexford near the Vischer Ferry Dam.

No alerts have been issued as of yet, however officials continue to watch the ice and the water levels in the areas of concern.
