Wildfires Rage in Canada, What it Means for the Capital Region

Reuters

Another smoky summer?

Remember those smoky days from last summer? Well, those wildfires in Canada are burning again. Does this mean the Capital Region will get a summer smoke out?

Fires are currently burning in British Columbia and parts of Alberta. That smoke is causing air quality alerts in places like Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The Times Union spoke to Bhupal Shrestha, a scientist with the New York State Mesonet. He says at this point, the fires are unlikely to affect our area, but if they increase in intensity, there could be some smoke in our air.

If the wildfire gets more extensive, that wildfire smoke might creep into the East Coast, as we’ve seen in the past.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, air quality for most of New York State is in the GOOD category.
