The aim is to prevent brush fires during the dry Spring months.

The annual statewide "burn ban" took effect yesterday and will be in place until May 14th.

The idea of the "burn ban" took shape back in 2009 and it's goal is to raise awareness when it comes to fire safety and also to help prevent brush and or wildfires during the typically dry months during the Spring.

The Interim Commissioner of the DEC, Amanda Lefton, was talking about the causes of fires and how people play a role in causing them -

"We see that the biggest cause of fires is actually people burning their debris. So we want to make sure that people know there is a ban on this. Please do not burn your debris,"

Both Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties posted on their Facebook pages helping to explain what the "burn ban" is all about -
