Update 8:01pm: Trooper Shoots Suspect After South Glens Falls Pursuit

New York State Police say a Kingsbury man was shot by a trooper Wednesday after he fled a traffic stop and pointed a firearm at officers.

According to NewsChannel 13, troopers tried to stop 43-year-old Billy Cassell III on Route 9 in South Glens Falls around 12:13 p.m. Cassell had an active arrest warrant from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office related to a criminal contempt charge.

Police say Cassell led them on a brief pursuit that ended when he crashed into a home at Route 9 and Catherine Street. After the crash, Cassell exited his vehicle with a loaded shotgun and ran from the scene.

Troopers say they ordered him several times to drop the weapon. When he allegedly raised the gun in their direction, a trooper fired, striking him in the shoulder.

Cassell was taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment. The investigation is ongoing.

New York State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened around 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. The incident took place near the intersection of State Route 9 and Catherine Street in South Glens Falls.

According to authorities, a suspect was injured during the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment. No State Troopers were hurt, and no other law enforcement agencies were involved.

Officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation is active, and more details may be released as they become available.
