The amount is lower than last year but still higher than any other on record.

Now that Fall has officially started and we're creeping up on the end of September, it's just about time for "spooky season" to get started. For some, it may have already begun. People are already shopping for their costumes, putting up their Halloween decorations and getting their candy.

So just how much are American's expected to spend this year on Halloween? According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are going to spend $11.6 billion overall. That number is slightly down from last year after a record $12.2 billion was spent on the holiday. Yes, while the amount this year is down from last year, its still higher than any other year on record.

Roughly 72% of people that were surveyed by the NRF said that they intend to celebrate Halloween this year. What does that include? That would be putting up Halloween decorations at their homes, handing out candy to trick or treaters, dressing up in costume, carving pumpkins or throwing a Halloween party.

Last year, which as a record high for Halloween spending, the cost per person was $108 where this year it's expected to be down a little bit at $103 per person. Overall, the spending for adults when it comes to costumes will be somewhere near $1.8 billion and for children that number is going to be close to $1.3 billion.

Have you started your Halloween shopping or decorating yet? According to the NRF survey, around half of the Halloween shoppers start their shopping before October.
